Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, which carries the nerve and blood supply. When deep decay, a crack or an old leaking filling lets bacteria reach it, the pulp becomes inflamed or infected. That is the throbbing, keeps-you-awake-at-night pain most people associate with a “nerve” problem.<\/p>\n
Root canal treatment removes that infected pulp, cleans and shapes the narrow canals inside the roots, disinfects them and seals them with an inert filling material. The tooth stays in your mouth and keeps doing its job. The alternative \u2014 pulling the tooth out \u2014 leaves a gap that then needs an implant or a bridge, which costs considerably more.<\/p>\n
This is the question we are asked most. The procedure is done under local anaesthesia with rotary instruments, so the treatment itself is comfortable \u2014 many patients are surprised that the pain stops the moment the pulp is removed. Any tenderness for a day or two afterwards is normal and settles with ordinary painkillers.<\/p>\n
A root-treated back tooth has lost its internal blood supply and a lot of its structure, which makes it brittle. A crown (cap) placed over it takes the chewing load and stops it splitting.
