If you are in severe pain, if your face is swelling, or if a tooth has been knocked out, call the clinic on the number at the top of this page and we will fit you in the same day wherever we possibly can.<\/p>\n<h3>What counts as a dental emergency<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Severe, unrelenting toothache<\/strong> \u2014 usually an infected nerve; needs the pressure released, not just painkillers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Facial or gum swelling<\/strong> \u2014 an abscess. Swelling that is spreading, or that affects swallowing or breathing, is urgent; go to a hospital if you cannot reach us.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A knocked-out permanent tooth<\/strong> \u2014 this is the one genuine race against the clock. Pick the tooth up by the crown, not the root, rinse it gently in milk or saline if it is dirty, put it back in the socket if you can, and get to us within the hour. Store it in milk if you cannot reinsert it. Never scrub it and never let it dry out.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A broken or cracked tooth<\/strong> \u2014 bring any pieces with you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bleeding that will not stop after an extraction<\/strong> \u2014 bite firmly on clean gauze for 20 minutes without checking, and call us.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A lost crown or filling<\/strong> \u2014 keep it, do not chew on that side, and come in.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Before you reach the clinic<\/h3>\n<p>Rinse with warm salt water. Take the painkiller you normally tolerate, with food. Do not place aspirin directly against the gum \u2014 it burns the tissue.
