Kids Dentistry (Pedodontics)
Gentle, unhurried care that does not make children afraid of dentists
A denture replaces missing teeth with a removable plate. Complete dentures replace a whole arch; partial dentures clip onto the remaining natural teeth to fill several gaps. Made and fitted properly, a denture restores chewing, supports the lips and cheeks, and lets you speak normally again.
The difference between a denture people wear and a denture that lives in a drawer is almost entirely in the impressions and the try-in stage. We take our time over both, and we let you see and approve the teeth at the try-in before the denture is finished.
If your lower denture has never stayed in place — a very common complaint, because the lower jaw offers much less surface to grip — two or four implants can be placed to clip the denture onto. It still comes out for cleaning, but it no longer moves while you eat. For many long-term denture wearers this is the single biggest improvement available to them.
Two to four weeks is typical. Speech and chewing feel odd at first; starting with soft food and reading aloud at home speeds it up considerably.
The lower jaw simply offers less surface area and the tongue works against the plate. A reline can help; implants to clip it onto are the definitive answer.
Take it out and brush it with soap and a denture brush — not toothpaste, which is abrasive. Leave it out overnight in water so the gums get a rest.
Yes. The gum ridge shrinks slowly after teeth are lost, so a reline every few years keeps the fit snug.
